Dakhla // History of the town

DAKHLA was established in 1884; it represented the first fishing centre to the Spanish presence in the Sahara.

DAKHLA is situated on the gulf of the same name, some 600kms south of LAAYOUNE town.

During the Spanish presence this town was called VILLA CISNEROS, and was almost solely intended for the Spanish settlers.

During the forties, fifties, and sixties, the town of DAKHLA used to have an airport for European flights coming from South America.

As from the end of seventies, and its return to the homeland, DAKHLA has known a continuous development and transformation.

Today DAKHLA became a modern harbour, industrial, agricultural, and tourist city.

This site will allow you to notice the extraordinary transformation of the town and its inhabitants.
